Custom Steel Fabrication Mount Isa

Our Steel Fabrication Machinery

At Hardrok Engineering, our workshop division is fully equipped with the latest and most advanced custom steel fab machinery, including our CNC machine. Based in Mount Isa, we work with a range of clients throughout Northern Queensland and the Northern Territory including Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

With the latest technology, we have the ability to create what you need quickly and in the region. Our new CNC Plasma Dual Head Cutting Machine in our North West workshop has almost limitless potential for creating what you need.

So, we’ve put together a quick guide to the CNC plasma cutting process, as well as its potential uses in manufacturing the custom steel fabrication that you need in Mount Isa.

What is CNC plasma cutting?

CNC Plasma cutting is a technique used to cut contours and shapes through plate metal, flat metal sheets, pipes, and structural beams.

In basic terms, plasma is gas heated up by an electric arc to form a beam capable of melting metal upon contact.

The high heat of the plasma combined with the intense pressure of the gas stream forms the precise cutting mechanism.

While the plasma melts through even thick materials, the gas pressure removes excess molten material.

What other processes are typically used alongside plasma cutting?

Plasma cutting can be employed alongside the following processes:

Machining

Plasma cutting can act as the bulk material removal operation for machinists. Thanks to the high level of cutting accuracy offered by plasma devices, it is possible to reduce the amount of machining required for processes such as tapping and drilling.

Fabrication: Welding, bending, and rolling

Plasma cutting can be used in fabrication processes such as bending, welding, and rolling. If you’re manufacturing a pipe with a large diameter, for example, it is possible to cut pipe end profiles with a plasma cutter, as well as cut junctions and holes in flat plate material. This can reduce the need for further shaping when the flat profile is rolled and welded.

Edge preparation

CNC plasma cutting machines are capable of creating contours, bevelled edges, and countersinks in stock materials, including three-dimensional and flat sections. This could prove useful in projects where weld preparations are needed, or you want to form angular junctions from plasma-cut pipes.

Cleaning and preservation

Sometimes, you need to cut a crust or skin from processed materials. In such cases, plasma cut profiles can be cleaned using abrasive blasting or pickling techniques to create a refined finish.

Why Choose Plasma Cutting Over Laser Or Flame Cutting?

Plasma cutting has a range of fantastic benefits that make it preferable to flame and laser alternatives, including:

  • It produces cleaner edges
  • It can cut smaller holes
  • It can cut through thicker materials compared to lasers
  • It can be used to cut highly reflective or polished materials

Designing Custom Fabrication Products

Custom fabrication is invaluable for a huge variety of projects. Whether you need precision-produced joists or frames for construction, railings or steel deck, or structures for a garden project our team can help you bring your vision to life.

We offer computer-assisted design (CAD) for all our projects and will deliver a full set of CAD drawings in the first stages of design. This means you can be confident we understand your vision and that the finished product will meet your expectations.

Cutting To Shape And Size

The next stage of your project is to cut the steel to shape and size. For most projects here at Hardrok Engineering we use plasma cutting. This is a process that uses heated plasma gas to create cuts with clean edges and minimal ingress. It’s good for all materials and especially good for highly polished surfaces.

Because we’re a family firm we are able to be completely flexible and our years of skill mean we will use alternative methods if the project needs it. We can use a range of techniques including machining, bending and rolling.

Welding & Fabricating

We use plasma cutting to enhance our welding. We can create precision-shaped end profiles for pipe welds and junction holes, with minimal need for additional shaping. Plasma cutting can also be used to create bevels or countersinks to form angular junctions with plasma-cut pipes. Plasma cut profiles can be cleaned using traditional pickling or abrasive blasting techniques.

Adding Finishing Touches

Finishes are used to prevent corrosion. There are various types of finishes available, each with different properties.

Machining

This type of finish is a zinc phosphate paint that is applied in two layers for maximum longevity. It reduces corrosion by inhibiting the formation of anodes on the surface of the fabricated steel.

Galvanisation

Galvanized steel is immersed in molten zinc, which then forms a paintable protective coating. It’s a process that is very reliable and can be used on a wide range of objects of all shapes and sizes.

Powder Coating

Using an electric charge, dry powder is fused to fabricated steel. The coating is then heat treated to create a dry finish. It’s an excellent choice to disguise imperfections.

Installation Of Steel Products

As well as creating, Hardrok Engineering will deliver and install your steel product. We’ll discuss the whole project as part of our design visits and undertake all the necessary logistics to get everything perfectly in place.
